More than a private area, a true space of value

For many members of a Foundation, Association, or Scientific Society, the “member portal” is the gateway to the organization. Yet too often, that door leads nowhere: outdated design, limited features, unclear access, or simply irrelevant content. Today, it is no longer enough to offer a private area. It must evolve into a useful, dynamic tool that connects with what members really expect.

1. Members expect more than downloading a receipt

Most portals provide only basic functions: updating personal data, downloading an invoice, or renewing membership fees. But professionals who are part of Foundations, Associations, or Scientific Societies expect valuable and personalized content. A modern portal should provide access to exclusive resources, online training, event participation, specialized documentation, and even opportunities to connect with other members by interest or topic.

2. Access must be easy, secure, and available on any device

Members often connect via smartphones, tablets, or professional environments. If access is slow, requires constant password recovery, or the portal is not mobile-friendly, the experience suffers. The current trend points to simplified authentication, integration with professional networks, and a fully responsive experience.

3. Personalization makes the difference

A modern member portal must offer relevant content based on each profile: if the member belongs to a working group, they should see recent minutes or upcoming meetings; if they are a trainer, they should access their course history; if they are new, they should find a personalized onboarding guide. The key is that each member feels the portal speaks their language.

4. Members want to see their journey with the organization… and feel part of it

Can your members review their participation history? See how many events they have attended? Which grants or awards they have applied for? Which committees they have collaborated with? Having a clear overview of each member’s journey reinforces loyalty and increases their sense of belonging. It also allows leadership to identify the most active members and detect internal talent.

5. Frustration arises when the portal is just “an obligation”

If the private area is limited to paying fees or downloading documents, members won’t return. There is no interaction, no community, no value. The member portal must evolve into a relationship platform, including alerts, internal forums, surveys, specialized resources, collaborative spaces, and even digital voting.

6. A powerful portal also frees up the administrative team

Automating processes such as certificate generation, membership renewals, document downloads, or event registrations not only improves the member’s experience—it also reduces the operational workload of staff. Fewer calls, fewer emails, and more time for strategic tasks.

What’s next?

If your member portal is seen as a simple “private area,” it may be time to rethink it. Many Foundations, Associations, and Scientific Societies —including those in the health field— are modernizing their digital management and transforming their portals into true digital hubs that connect organizations with their members.

The real value is not only in the content, but in how it is delivered, personalized, and how it strengthens the relationship between the member and the organization: creating shared value.
